Highland Park, MI, is encircled by a wide variety of art and cultural venues that residents and visitors enjoy. There’s a vast mix of appealing theaters to see movies, plays, comedy shows, and various musical performances. Here are four of our top talent showcases in the greater Michigan region:

1. Detroit Repertory

Detroit Rep, as locals affectionately call it, is one of Michigan’s oldest and highest-acclaimed playhouses. Less than an eight-mile drive from Highland Park, this non-profit professional auditorium is a great spot to see talented actors perform thought-provoking new plays from up-and-coming playwrights. Typically, the Repertory runs four major shows a year.

What sets Detroit Rep apart from many other live performance spots is its focus on interracial casting for any part whenever possible. Many play-goers here also love the intimate neighborhood feel of the place.

2. Ford-Wyoming Drive-In

For something different from the usual park and be seated indoors show experience, drive-in movies can be a lot of fun! With an outdoor space that holds five different screens, the Ford-Wyoming Drive-In in nearby Dearborn bills itself as the world’s largest drive-in. The property offers recently released double feature movies for one flat fee per vehicle.

You can load up your Jeep Cherokee with up to four friends and enjoy your double feature choice any day of the week. Even with the folding seat up, you’ll still have lots of cargo room in the back for your guests’ coats. Since the Ford-Wyoming has discontinued external speakers, you can use Wi-Fi streaming for sound or opt for their FM radio. The deposit for the radio is about $30.

3. Music Hall Center

Located in downtown Detroit in a restored historic 1928 building, the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts is an iconic place to appreciate everything from ballet dancing to jazz music. This not-for-profit cultural center is also known for its lively musical plays.

You can enjoy the comfort of four lounges here or grab a bite at the trendy Aretha’s Jazz Cafe. There’s also a bar on site where you can get a drink. If you’ll be drinking alcohol, don’t drink and drive. Drink responsibly and in moderation, and remember that alcohol is for adults of the legal drinking age.

4. Planet Ant

If you’re a fan of improvisational comedy, open mic nights, or karaoke contests in addition to plays and musicals, you’ll probably get a kick out of Planet Ant on Caniff Street in Hamtramck, Michigan. Only a short distance from Highland Park, Planet Ant is a non-profit performing arts center with a small, casual vibe that highlights creative events.
