Highland Park, MI is only a short drive away from some great fun attractions in Detroit. Whether you want to stay in the suburbs or visit the city, these fun activities are perfect for Sunday Fun Days, friend dates, or play dates with the kids. Check out a few free things to do before you plan your day trip.

1. COOL CITIES Park

Located at 14150 Woodrow Wilson Street in Detroit, COOL CITIES Park is a community park that frequently hosts a farmers market and various events. When there aren’t any events going on, visitors can explore the gorgeous booms in the garden and walking paths. When the farmers market is open, visitors can get freebies from the vendors.

2. Detroit Institute of Arts

The Detroit Institute of Arts at 5200 Woodward Avenue is one of the most beloved museums in the metropolitan area. As of 2012, visitors who live in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties can enjoy free general admission to the museum. You can reserve your tickets and verify your county address online.

There are several exciting exhibits and collections at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The main collection has over 65,000 artworks ranging from early civilizations to contemporary art. The main collections include American Art Before 1950, Ancient Middle Eastern Art, Center for African American Art, Islamic Art, and Greco-Roman and Ancient European Art. The Africa, Oceania, & Indigenous Americas art collection is also incredible to see.

3. Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD)

MOCAD is located at 4454 Woodward Avenue, right in the heart of Detroit. This museum is a non-profit organization, which means admission is generally free for students, seniors, and children under the age of 12. For other visitors, ticket admission is a gentle suggestion with a sliding scale model, which means you may not need to pay for general admission.

MOCAD has a special focus on collections that encourage human understanding, social change, and the local community. Many of the contemporary works at the museum are from local Detroit artists, musicians, and cultural scholars, but there are also collections that feature worldwide art exhibits.

4. Belle Isle Park

Belle Isle Park is located on Belle Isle in the middle of the Detroit River. Belle Isle Park is a 935-acre park on the west side of the island and gives visitors access to the Belle Isle Nature Center and the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory. At the park, you can enjoy the inland lake system, wonderful natural habitats, and gorgeous bike and walking trails.

If you’re ready for a relaxing and affordable day with your loved ones, there are plenty of things to do in the Detroit and Highland Park area.
