Tourist Attractions in Detroit

As part of Metro Detroit, Highland Park, MI is never far from amazing entertainment, arts, food, and a variety of cultures. If you’re in the neighborhood and not sure where to begin, then here are some of the best tourist attractions near you!

1. Belle Isle Aquarium

Located on 3 Inselruhe Avenue in Belle Isle Park, this volunteer-run establishment was opened back in 1904, making it one of the oldest public aquariums in the country. The historic building it’s housed in was designed by famed Detroit architect Albert Kahn, and its collection of marine animals features species from all over the Great Lakes region, including all seven species of air-breathing gar found in North America.
Guests can also view recreations of several ecosystems from Africa and South America. After checking out the aquarium, be sure to check out the other park facilities and beaches dotting Belle Isle.

2. Dieppe Gardens

Not far from Belle Isle, Dieppe Gardens on 78 Riverside Drive is a gorgeous park that offers terrific riverside views of Downtown Detroit from the Windsor side of the Detroit River. A number of beautiful war memorials can be found at the park, which was named in memory of the Essex-Kent Scottish Regiment’s fallen members who died fighting in the French city of Dieppe during World War II.
While you’re visiting, you can admire the vibrant flower displays or take a river cruise with one of the sightseeing tours based next to the Gardens. If you like to picnic, pack your food and supplies into your Jeep Grand Cherokee’s spacious cargo area and head to one of several great picnicking spots.

3. Detroit Historical Museum

This history museum on 5401 Woodward Avenue offers a fascinating look into Detroit’s storied past, spanning from its days as a French trading hub in the early 1700s to the Motown era and the city’s recent revitalization. One of its most popular permanent exhibits is the Streets of Detroit, recreating the city as it appeared during the 1840s with period-accurate architecture and cobblestone streets.
There’s also the Allesee Gallery of Culture, showing how thriving music and sports scenes rose from the unrest that followed World War II. Other exhibits showcase countless artifacts, documents, and photos that help to depict Detroit’s rise as one of America’s leading industrial centers. Be sure to visit throughout the year since the museum regularly hosts rotating and traveling exhibitions.
