Pope Park is a hidden gem located in Hamtramck, Michigan that was built in 1982 to honor Pope St. John Paul II’s first visit to the area. Its official name is Karol Wojtyla Hamtramck Park, but no one actually calls it that. Knowing what this tiny slice of Polish history has to offer, as well as what it doesn’t, will help you be prepared and get the most enjoyment out of your visit.

1. Wear Sunscreen

The majority of the park sits in full sun. If you’re planning on spending any length of time here at all, make sure you apply sunscreen to avoid a burn. Yes, you’re in Michigan, but the sun is still the sun. Even if you’re not a fan of slathering on sunscreen, be sure to bring your sunglasses or a hat so you won’t regret it later.

2. Bring Coffee or Lunch

Stop ahead of time at a nearby area restaurant or coffee shop, or pack a lunch so you can enjoy a picnic on one of the park’s benches as you take in the beautiful artwork. This park is a great spot to come and eat lunch alone, to meet a friend for coffee, or to enjoy a picnic with your family.

3. Don’t Forget a Book

If you’re looking for a place to escape with a good book, this park has just what you need. There are several benches where you can sit and relax and read in the fresh air. You’ll be surrounded by some beautiful views filled with deep religious and historical meaning.

4. Bring Your Camera

Whether you’re a fashion blogger looking for a new spot to take pictures, or you just love religious history, Pope Park has plenty of opportunities for photos. The spot features a large,18 foot tall, 6,000-pound statue of Pope St. John Paul II himself. The walls surrounding the park are covered in several beautifully painted murals by the Polish artist Dennis Orlowski.

5. Learn the Background

When Dennis Orlowski painted the park’s murals, it has been said that the residents of Hamtramck were his inspiration for the people he painted. The Murals depict a square in Poland and show the heart of Polish culture. The statue serves as a reminder to the community of just how great an influence the pope had both locally and globally during that time.
