You’ll love exploring the metro area and beyond in your Jeep SUV. When you’re ready for a day trip, start with our three favorite things to do near Detroit.

1. Experience Germany in Frankenmuth

The quaint town of Frankenmuth showcases Bavarian-style architecture alongside German food and cultural attractions. You’ll find countless ways to have fun in Little Bavaria whether you decide to take a ride on the Bavarian Belle Riverboat or enjoy a realistic blacksmithing experience. Step back in time and learn more about the town’s German heritage at the Frankenmuth Historical Museum at 613 S Main St.

Frankenmuth is about an 80-minute drive from Detroit, so choose a pleasant day and take the top off your Jeep Wrangler before you leave. Don’t forget to enjoy a fried chicken dinner, which is the signature dish of Little Bavaria. Plan your visit for April 25 and 26 to check out the annual Bringin’ Back the 80s Festival,

2. Stroll the Riverwalk in Bay City

Enjoy the waterfront lifestyle with a trip to the coast of Lake Huron. Bay City is about 2 hours from downtown Detroit, and the Saginaw River runs right through town. Stroll or bike along the Riverwalk path for scenic views and access to attractions like Kantzler Arboretum and Veterans Memorial Park.

You can shop for antiques and artisan chocolates, play golf, or try your hand at the arcade. On a rainy day, stroll through the Antique Toy and Firehouse Museum for a whimsical trip back in time. Explore the natural beauty of the Great Lakes region at Bay City State Park, which features campgrounds, trails, and an accessible playground at 3582 State Park Dr by the Saginaw Bay.

3. Attend the Renaissance Festival in Marshall

Load up your Jeep Grand Cherokee with friends and drive about 90 minutes from Detroit to the Royal Stagg Renaissance Festival at Cornwell’s Turkeyville. It’s located at 18935 15 1/2 Mile Rd. This free event will include food and beverages, activities, demonstrations, live music, and more. You’ll find vendors selling leather goods and garments, henna tattoos, wood crafts, jewelry, hair braiding, and tarot and psychic readings.

Costumes are encouraged but not required, so consider wearing Renaissance-inspired garb. The Royal Stagg takes place May 10 and 11 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you can’t make those dates, travel to Marshall anyway to check out the American Museum of Magic or enjoy a performance at Franke Center for the Arts.
