Spark Plug Replacement

How Often Should You Change Your Spark Plugs?

Spark plugs are one of the busiest components of your engine. A single plug fires up to 400 times per minute, with 12,000 to 25,000 volts pulsing through it. Eventually, all this effort takes a toll and when a plug is on its last legs, the cylinder starts to misfire. Let's look at how often you should visit your local Chrysler dealer for new plugs, and how to know when a plug is finally failing. more Plugs Can Last for 80,000 Miles In a well-maintained engine, plugs can last up to 80,000 miles. But it's quite likely you'll need to replace one or two of them before that. Plugs tend to wear out individually and not all at once. A plug's lifespan can be shortened by chemical contamination, unbalanced fuel-air mixture, improper torque, and a few other factors. Look for Signs of Plug Trouble To know when to change a plug, it's best to keep an eye on your engine's performance. The following five telltale signs of plug problems should prompt you to ask a technician to take a look. Your Fuel Efficiency Drops When a plug begins to falter, that cylinder is no longer properly igniting the fuel-air mixture. This misfiring leads to an excess of unburned fuel inside the combustion chamber, which will start to coat the plug with soot and deal corrosive damage. This further reduces the plug's ability to function. With one cylinder suffering, your engine is no longer burning fuel as efficiently as before. You'll notice your vehicle guzzling gas and you'll have to refill the tank more often for each mile you drive. You Start Idling Roughly Having lost the full power of at least one cylinder, your engine will begin to idle roughly when you pause at traffic lights. You might feel it shaking and juddering while emitting coughing, sputtering sounds. This rough idling will be more noticeable with a V4 engine than with a V6 or V8. You Can't Accelerate Properly When your engine begins to falter in this way, try to avoid overtaking other vehicles. With at least one cylinder misfiring, you won't have as much accelerative force as before. You Notice Black Smoke Behind You A misfiring plug creates a buildup of excess fuel in the chambers, which is forced out through the exhaust system. This unburned fuel will begin to erupt from the tailpipe as thick black smoke. You Struggle to Start Your Engine If you have more than one malfunctioning plug, your engine might even struggle to fire up in the morning. If this happens, check your plugs or have a technician inspect them for you. Have your plugs examined, cleaned, or replaced today at Bill Snethkamp Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM. We've been family-owned and operated since 1926.

Is the Engine on Your Car Overheating? 3 Possible Reasons

A car overheating is a problem no driver wants to deal with. Engine heat can rapidly cause damage to critical and sensitive engine parts. Fortunately, there are always early warning signs that your engine is running too hot. If your engine is overheating, we can repair the problem for you. As your Chrysler dealer, we want to tell you more about some signs of potential trouble. more Coolant Leak Your car's temperature is controlled by the flow of liquid coolant. This coolant is a mix of antifreeze and water, and it's able to absorb heat. Your engine generates huge amounts of heat, and the heat must be removed ASAP. As coolant is pumped through your engine, it absorbs the radiating heat and takes it to your radiator where the heat is removed. A coolant leak can very quickly cause your engine to spike. As coolant is lost, the pressure in the system slows down. This causes the coolant to run slower and increases the heat even more. A coolant leak is usually easy to spot, as coolant is manufactured in bright colors like pink, blue, and green. If you see a pool in any of these colors under your car, call us ASAP. We'll find and fix the leak for you. Broken Water Pump The water pump pumps coolant through your system. Although the pump is relatively small, it's very powerful. This pump pushes the coolant through your engine at high speed and under high pressure. Speed is essential, as the faster, the coolant flows, the faster it can cool your engine. The pump will continue to run as long as your engine is above a preset temperature. All pumps can eventually wear out, and the water pump is no exception. If the pump fails, the coolant won't be able to move through the engine. This will cause your engine temperature to rise rapidly. Our technicians can test your pump and replace it very quickly for you if it's failed. Your cooling problem will be fixed as soon as the pump is operating again. Engine Temperature Gauge When your engine temperature is normal, it should sit around the middle of the temperature gauge. You may see temporary increases, for example, if you're towing a heavy trailer uphill, but the temperature should return to normal. An engine temperature that continues to increase is a sign of trouble. It means that there's a problem with your cooling system. The gauge doesn't identify the source of the problem, but it shows that one exists. Our expert Chrysler technicians will find the cause of the overheating and fix it before it causes any damage. If your car is overheating, call us ASAP at Bill Snethkamp CDJR.

Catalytic Converter

3 Signs Your Car Needs a New Catalytic Converter

A catalytic converter is more than just a legally mandated piece of equipment for your vehicle. On top of protecting our atmosphere from damage and keeping air breathable, this device is necessary for your fuel system to operate at its best. If you are sensing something is wrong in the function of your vehicle, it just might be the catalytic. This list will offer some hints to determine if it's time to update your converter. more 1. Needing More Gas than Usual When driving, your engine uses a variety of calculations to determine how much gas is necessary to meet your demands. Fuel can only be used if the correct balance of air is also present, and when your converter is clogged this will no longer be possible. With a blockage, old air can not pass through the system and occupies the space where new air would otherwise be entering, resulting in fuel being sprayed but wasted. 2. Reduced Horsepower Things like age or an excessively rich mixture of fuel to air can cause your converter to become blocked with a build-up of deposits. Without the correct balance of these two elements, your car will experience a reduction in its overall horsepower. This is often one of the earliest signs that your converter is about to go out. Issues like this one will become exceptionally apparent when trying to accelerate to overtake a lane or when beginning motion after a stop. In both instances, you will witness a sort of lagging in speed from what you would normally expect. 3. Unexpected Noises Within the converter are layers of metal, honeycombed films. Normally these layers serve to filter the exhaust gases and allow them to contact the catalyst element, allowing for proper conversion of toxins. They can become damaged, however, and become loose within the device. Once broken into pieces, a rattling sound will be heard from beneath the vehicle, especially at start-up. If the volume of the noise is exceptionally loud while applying pressure to the gas pedal, this may be a sign that your converter is gone entirely. Without the converter present to control airflow, the tailpipe will make a "roaring" sound during acceleration. This situation will also result in failure of any emissions tests your vehicle may be subject to. Your vehicle can only offer you its best fuel usage and horsepower if its equipment is operating efficiently, and the converter is a vital part of that system. If you have noticed any of the symptoms listed here, it may be time to shop for a new converter. Visit Bill Snethkamp Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram to update your catalytic and know you're getting the greatest performance possible from your engine.

How Often Should You Replace Your Chrysler's Brake Pads?

If you're like most people, you're constantly looking for ways to save money. One way to do that is by knowing when to replace your car's brake pads. Depending on how often you drive, they may need to be replaced every few months or years. So, how can you tell when it's time to visit your Chrysler dealer? Keep reading to find out! more Squeaking Brakes If your car starts making strange squealing noises, it may be time to replace your braking pads. Disk pads are a crucial safety component, so it's always best to err on the side of caution, even if it could be tempting to ignore the noise and hope it goes away. New braking pads can help extend the lifespan of your brakes overall, in addition to enhancing your braking performance. Thin Disk Pads If you're unsure whether your brakes need attention, there are a few simple tests you can do at home. First, try gently pressing the brake pedal while the car is parked. If the pedal feels soft or sponge-like, that's a sign that the pads may be worn down. If the pads are less than a quarter-inch thick, they need to be replaced. Remember, safety comes first, so don't wait until it's too late to take care of your brakes. Vibrations when Braking It's crucial to be able to brake swiftly and safely while driving. If your brakes vibrate when you press the pedal down, they may require repair. When the pads contact the rotors, they are intended to generate friction. The rotors will start to rattle if the pads are worn out since they won't be able to create adequate friction. This can lead to longer stopping distances and increased wear on the pads and rotors. If you notice your brakes vibrating, it's essential to have them checked by an expert as soon as possible. Brake Pad Indicator Light The brake pad indicator light is an important safety feature that should not be ignored. This light comes on when the braking pads are worn down and must be replaced. The brake pad indicator light is usually located on the dashboard, and a warning sound accompanies it. If this light comes on, it is important to take your car to a qualified mechanic as soon as possible to have the brakes inspected and replaced if necessary. If you're still unsure of whether or not to replace your disk pads, contact us at Bill Snethkamp Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. We would be more than happy to help advise you on when and how often to replace your braking pads so that you can drive safely and confidently. Image by KriszM from Pixabay
