Cony hot dog

3 Best Places for Coney Dogs in Highland Park You Should Try

The Coney dog, or Coney Island hot dog, is all beef, and has beanless chili, white onions, and yellow mustard. This famous local dish started in New York, but it's very popular in Highland Park and the rest of the Detroit area. The Detroit Coney dog has different toppings than the ones you can find in New York. Here are some of the best places for Coney dogs near Highland Park. more 1. Red Hots Coney Island Red Hots Coney Island has been serving customers delicious Coney dogs in the Highland Park area since 1921. They make their chili from scratch, and they always use fresh, high-quality ingredients. In 2015, the Food Network featured this restaurant on their show, 'American Diner Revival.' The whole place was remodeled with a fun retro style, and several new items were added to the menu. Coney dogs are available all day long. For breakfast, you can also choose grits, hash browns, eggs, and other traditional fare. Other lunch items include chili fries, chicken tenders, and sliders. Domestic and imported beers are also available to enjoy with your meal. You can visit on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. 2. American Coney Island American Coney Island celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017. Constantine “Gust” Keros opened it in 1917 after coming to Detroit from Greece and operating a hot dog cart. The Keros family still runs this restaurant, and the hot dogs are made in Dearborn with a specially seasoned, high-quality natural skin casing. The chili also uses a secret family recipe. You can also try a gyro with lamb, beef, tomatoes, onions, and special sauce. Greek salad, spinach pie, grilled chicken pita, tuna salad sandwiches, and other delicious options are available as well. This excellent restaurant is conveniently open 24-hours a day. You'll love the patriotic red, white, and blue decor inside the restaurant. 3. Lafayette Coney Island A few years after American Coney Island opened, Keros's brother, Bill, opened Lafayette Coney Island right next door. This place uses different hot dogs and different chili, and it has a simple menu and an old-school atmosphere with friendly employees. Both restaurants are well-known for their rivalry, and Bill's family sold Lafayette Coney Island to its employees about 30 years ago. The Food Network has talked about both restaurants on its shows, 'Man vs. Food' and 'Food Wars.' Lafayette Coney Island is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 a.m. and Friday and Saturday until 4 a.m. On Sunday, it's open from 9:30 a.m. until 3 a.m. Many people call trying a Coney dog from both Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island the Coney Challenge. The hardest part is deciding which of these delicious places is better. If hot dogs aren't your favorite food, you can still find a menu item you love at one of these three restaurants. They even have their own hats, T-shirts, and other merchandise available for purchase. Photo by Caleb Oquendo from Pexels

Winter in Highland Park

Why Winter Tire Pressure Matters in Highland Park

In winter, your vehicle's tire pressure could drop as the air gets colder. Underinflated tires can make controlling your car on slippery roads difficult. If your car has a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), the warning light on the dashboard could come on. Here's some more information about why winter tire pressure matters and how you can keep your vehicle working well. more The Effects of Cold Weather on Tire Pressure The air inside your tires contracts as it cools, lowering your tire pressure. In most situations, your tires will lose about one psi of air pressure for every 10 degrees that the temperature drops. A sudden temperature swing could cause a major change in your tire pressure. If there's a big change in the weather, you should check your tire pressure. You should also take a look at your tire pressure at least once a month in the winter. Even if your car's TPMS light isn't on, your tire pressure could be low. The Hazards of Underinflated Tires Low tire pressure makes stopping distances longer, no matter how fast you drive. It also makes steering and handling your car more difficult. Underinflation often leads to irregular wear, shortening your tires' lives, and costing you money. It can even lead to a flat tire or a dangerous blowout on the road. How to Maintain Your Tire Pressure Making sure your air pressure is corect can extend your tires' lives and make you and your passengers safer. It can also improve your gas mileage. Using a tire gauge is important because it's difficult to spot low tires quickly just by looking at them or relying on your TPMS. Fortunately, tire gauges are inexpensive, compact, and easy to use. Before you check your tire pressure, don't drive your car for a few hours. This ensures that the air inside the tires will be the same temperature as the air outside, giving you a more accurate reading. You can get started by removing the cap from one of your tires' valve stems. Press the end of your tire gauge into it to read your tire pressure, then replace the cap for the valve stem when you have finished. You can find the best tire pressure for your vehicle in your owner's manual or on a small sticker on the inside of the driver's side door. If needed, you can inflate your tires with a portable air compressor or you can use the compressor at a gas station. Some gas stations have devices that let you set the desired psi. They stop automatically when your tire reaches that air pressure, making adding air without a separate tire gauge much easier. You can also keep your tires in good condition by having them checked by a professional and rotated regularly. Having the right tire pressure could prevent an accident on icy winter roads. Spending just a few dollars on a tire gauge now could help you avoid thousands in repair costs later. You should also keep your vehicle in great shape and drive slowly. The Whitney

Everything You Need to Know About The Whitney in Detroit

It is a delight to find classy restaurants when traveling or on a special, romantic date. However, it is rare to find such an establishment that serves American cuisine and has an extensive history. Luckily enough, these places do exist and Detroit, Michigan, has you covered. Detroit's historic Whitney restaurant has class, charm, ghosts, and delicious American cuisine. more A Brief History This palatial mansion was built in 1894 by lumber baron David Whitney Jr. He was a successful man, yet very humble. The gorgeous house was built to appease his wife who had a taste for finer things, rather than for himself. He was said to admit that he would have been just as happy living in a log cabin. Thank goodness he didn't as he inadvertently blessed Detroit with the stunning structure that would become the one-of-a-kind Whitney building. The building was built with an elegant rose-colored South Dakota Jasper granite in a Romanesque Revival style. Adding to its aesthetic, the building has fish scale patterned slate tiles and exquisite stained-glass windows crafted by Tiffany's in New York. It is a stupendous home with 52 rooms, 10 bathrooms, 218 windows, and 20 fireplaces. Some of the most noteworthy rooms include but are not limited to the central grand hall, dining room, billiard room, dessert parlor, and of course, the popular Ghostbar on the third floor. Other notable rooms include the library, ballroom, art gallery, dressing rooms, reception rooms, and music room. Popular Highlights: The Whitney Ghostbar and Gardens Some of the most unique and admired highlights of the restaurant include The Ghostbar. It is well-known and titled as such due to recorded hauntings. The Whitney is considered one of Detroit's most haunted buildings. After David Whitney and his second wife passed away, the building was sold to The Wayne County Medical Society. During this time, it housed tuberculosis (TB) patients and was eventually kept by The Visiting Nurse Association until 1979. Now it is believed to be haunted by TB patients as well as David Whitney Jr. and his wife. Aside from ghosts, The Ghostbar hosts live entertainment and sells the world-famous Witching Hour Martini. If interested in visiting The Ghostbar though, make sure and call to make a reservation first. The Gardens are also very popular at The Whitney where each day brings something new to its guests. They hold garden parties which showcase Detroit's musical talent on Thursday evenings and a Friday Night Motown Review filled with a mixture of new and classic Motown music. When not hosting a private party, The Garden hosts a Songwriter's Brunch on Saturdays and an afternoon "Lavender Tea" on Sundays. This wonderful restaurant has a little something for everybody. Whether you are looking to try the delicious cuisine, go ghost hunting, or just bask in the beauty of the building, The Whitney has much to offer. With all its unique features and beautifully haunting aesthetic, it is well worth a visit. For more information visit The Whitney's site. Photo by Jeswin Thomas from Pexels
