It is a delight to find classy restaurants when traveling or on a special, romantic date. However, it is rare to find such an establishment that serves American cuisine and has an extensive history. Luckily enough, these places do exist and Detroit, Michigan, has you covered. Detroit's historic Whitney restaurant has class, charm, ghosts, and delicious American cuisine. more A Brief History This palatial mansion was built in 1894 by lumber baron David Whitney Jr. He was a successful man, yet very humble. The gorgeous house was built to appease his wife who had a taste for finer things, rather than for himself. He was said to admit that he would have been just as happy living in a log cabin. Thank goodness he didn't as he inadvertently blessed Detroit with the stunning structure that would become the one-of-a-kind Whitney building. The building was built with an elegant rose-colored South Dakota Jasper granite in a Romanesque Revival style. Adding to its aesthetic, the building has fish scale patterned slate tiles and exquisite stained-glass windows crafted by Tiffany's in New York. It is a stupendous home with 52 rooms, 10 bathrooms, 218 windows, and 20 fireplaces. Some of the most noteworthy rooms include but are not limited to the central grand hall, dining room, billiard room, dessert parlor, and of course, the popular Ghostbar on the third floor. Other notable rooms include the library, ballroom, art gallery, dressing rooms, reception rooms, and music room. Popular Highlights: The Whitney Ghostbar and Gardens Some of the most unique and admired highlights of the restaurant include The Ghostbar. It is well-known and titled as such due to recorded hauntings. The Whitney is considered one of Detroit's most haunted buildings. After David Whitney and his second wife passed away, the building was sold to The Wayne County Medical Society. During this time, it housed tuberculosis (TB) patients and was eventually kept by The Visiting Nurse Association until 1979. Now it is believed to be haunted by TB patients as well as David Whitney Jr. and his wife. Aside from ghosts, The Ghostbar hosts live entertainment and sells the world-famous Witching Hour Martini. This is a small stand that's been around since the 1960s and there are many soft-serve flavors to choose from along with flavor bursts and the Avalanche, which is the equivalent of a Blizzard from Dairy Queen, with candy and treats mixed in. Red Hots Coney Island Family owned and operated since 1921, Red Hots Coney Island on Victor Street is a retro diner famous for its Coney Island hot dogs. The friendly welcome you receive from owners Richard and Carol will make you feel right at home. The vintage posters and signs give the place a cool ambiance. Breakfast is served from 7-11 a.m. The menu includes a variety of egg dishes, hash browns, grits, toast, oatmeal, and more. You can add sides of bacon or sausage links or patties. And, of course, Coney Dogs are served all day. The fresh roast coffee is from Becharas Brothers in Highland Park. 2. La Dolce Vita La Dolce Vita on Woodward Avenue doesn't serve breakfast, but it's famed for its Italian Sunday brunch. The interior decor and artwork give the restaurant an elegant but relaxed feel. If the weather permits, you can sit on the cool patio with its brickwork, iron railings, and abundance of ivy. While the live band plays, you can enjoy bottomless Bloody Marys and mimosas. The brunch menu offers fresh fruit, bagel and smoked salmon, shrimp Benedict, egg sardau, Fettuccine Florentine, and fruit crepes. Or you could opt for the chef's pasta, omelet, or quiche of the day. 3. Kuzzo's Chicken & Waffles Located on Livernois Avenue north of Highland Park, Kuzzo's has an old-school jazz vibe with lots of wood, exposed brickwork, and unusual artwork. Apparently, "kuzzo" is a term of endearment for a family member or friend, and the employees greet customers like friends. It can get really busy, so you might have to wait to get seated. The all-day waffle combos feature such unusual delights as What Up Doe, Granny Plum, Tweety Bird, and Big Pappa. Breakfast combos include Nana's biscuits and gravy, Connie's fish and grits, and "Cuddin Pete." You also have choices of omelets and sandwiches. The drink selections include homemade lemonade and red, purple, and blue Kool-Aid. 4. Detroit One Coney Island Detroit One Coney Island is a cozy family-owned-and-operated diner on 7 Mile Road offering a warm welcome and freshly prepared food with the finest ingredients. The clean, bright decor makes for a homey atmosphere. It's a full-service restaurant, and you can get takeout or order delivery. The breakfast menu offers a selection of omelets, including the highly recommended Greek omelet, and sandwiches such as the grilled feta cheese and egg or breakfast burrito. The anytime breakfasts include veggie hash, Greek hash, and the all-meat skillet, while the specials feature the salmon patty breakfast, steak breakfast, and the super breakfast. Bikes & Coffee If you love bikes and coffee, you'll love stopping by the aptly-named Bikes & Coffee coffee shop. Stop by here to grab your favorite coffee drink during one of your rides. They also have bagels, pastries, and other snacks to choose from. If you need your bike worked on, you can also get that done here. The shop tailors to bikers who need new builds and repairs on their bicycles. There's no better way than spending a day talking to others who have similar interests while getting your bike worked on. 4. Astro Coffee Astro Coffee is located in the historic neighborhood of Corktown in Detroit. They source their own coffees by roasting them at their Core City facility. If you're a frequent visitor, you'll be able to try a constantly changing selection of new coffees that change each season. They're proud to showcase small lot producers in the coffee world. In addition to black coffee, they also have espresso drinks to choose from. All their food is made using natural and organic products and is made in house, including their sandwiches and baked goods. Even their produce is local, as you'll find Ghost Acre Farms, Keep Growing Detroit, and Detroit Mushroom Company used in their menu among others. Their bread and dairy products come from nearby Michigan. They are also working on Ochre Bakery, which is expected to debut this year and will expand their baked goods to naturally leavened croissants, bread, and whole cakes.
