Located less than 10 miles northwest of downtown Detroit and not far from the shores of Lake St. Clair and the banks of the Detroit River, the city of Highland Park, MI, is close to numerous nature reserves and state parks where you can spend some time away from the urban bustle. Whether you live in the area or are traveling around in your 2022 Dodge Charger, these are some of the best beaches you should check out.

1. Belle Isle Park

The most popular weekend destination among Detroit residents, Belle Isle Park covers an area of a little under 1,000 acres and was established in 1845. The northern part of the island features a yacht club, a sailing center, public boat launches, as well as a series of beaches where you can swim while taking in some stunning views of the Detroit skyline.

Located a little over 10 miles southeast of downtown Highland Park, Belle Isle can be reached in about 20 minutes by car along route M-10. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, this sprawling park is an excellent destination for numerous outdoor activities, including canoeing, kayaking, boating, and hiking. Belle Isle Park is open year-round between 5:00 am and 10:00 pm.

2. Lake St. Clair Metropark

Spanning an area of about 770 acres, Lake St. Clair Metropark is another well-known weekend destination among Highland Park locals. This beautiful lakeside reserve was established in 1950 and offers a 1,000-feet swimming beach along the shores of Lake St. Clair, as well as a large network of hiking trails, a playground, a marina, scenic viewpoints, and fully equipped picnic areas.

Located a little over 27 miles northeast of downtown Highland Park, Lake St. Clair Metropark can be reached in about half an hour by car, driving along route I-696. This public recreation area is open year-round between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm, and is an excellent place for birdwatching, kiteboarding, boating, mountain biking, swimming, windsurfing, and other recreational activities.

3. Walter & Mary Burke Park

Featuring a small swimming beach, fishing docks, a playground, and two pavilions that can be rented for events, Walter & Mary Burke Park is a lakeside green area located about 37 miles northeast of downtown Highland Park. Open year-round between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm, this place is a great destination for numerous water sports and outdoor activities, as well as a perfect spot to sunbathe and take a break from the routine.
