Anyone who has visited Detroit, Michigan can tell their friends about the hotspots and the places that everybody visits. But there are some hidden attractions that you would only know about if you happened to stumble across them. Many are in and around Highland Park (which is part of Metro Detroit) and are true “hidden gems.”
1. Highland Heights: A Historic District
Highland Heights is registered in the National Registry of Historic Places as a U.S. Historic district, with architecture that dates between 1900 and 1930. Though it is a residential location, many of the locals go out of their way to take a stroll on the sidewalk and view the significant houses. Many will also stop at the historic McGregor Public Library, which was established in 1926.
2. Great Lakes Wine and Spirits
This city is known to the locals for its wineries. It is home to wine companies that sell wholesale to local businesses and some that sell to individuals. A quaint place to visit is the Great Lakes Wine and Spirits. While they maintain a small-town aura, their motto is “We’re local, Everywhere.” They boast that they are the largest alcoholic beverage wholesaler in the state of Michigan!
If you do indulge, it is important to remember to always drink responsibly. Do not drink and drive, drink in moderation, and only drink if you are of legal drinking age.
3. Lincoln Street Art Park
Another free option is the Lincoln Street Art Park. If you’re interested in modern and graffiti art, then this place is an excellent option. During the day, you can drive through and take your time to admire the art and take pictures. They also host events throughout the year, often featuring electronic music and public bonfires. There are some train tracks you can climb to see the city from a higher vantage point.
4. Ford Highland Park Plant
A very important piece of American history is the Ford plant located in this city. It is the first factory ever in history to assemble cars on a moving assembly line. As a historic landmark, it is now open to the public, reimagined as a museum with a gift shop and a coffee shop. Automotive tours and historic information are offered along with an informational theater and automotive history displays.
As we all know, gems are small items of great value. That’s what these places are, and there are many more scattered throughout the city (if you know where to look!).
