Whether you live in Detroit or are just visiting, the Detroit Repertory Theatre is a local gem that should not be missed. Not only is it a place where community theater thrives, but it is also dedicated to various social causes that affect the city as a whole. It is truly an attraction that everyone can enjoy.

It Fights Racism

As part of its mission, the theatre seeks to fight racism by advocating for interracial casts, cultivating efforts to retain diversity in the community, and preferring to cast members without regard for ethnicity and gender. The founders of the theatre began their mission in 1957 and were able to survive the violent 1960s with artistic principles intact.

It Is Award Winning

The theatre has literally won more awards than it has been able to keep track of. Some more noteworthy awards that are remembered include The National AEA Rosetta LeNoire Award for exemplary artistic standards, The Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award for leadership in the arts, the Wayne County Community Service Award for encouraging positive community change, the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights Community Service Award, and The Thank You Award from the City of Detroit and Quicken Loans.

It Puts on Excellent Live Theatre

Along with its high artistic standards and commitment to diverse casting policies, the theatre continually produces four excellent live theatre shows each year. For example, for the 2019-2020 season, the theatre produced Channel Cat by Joseph Zettelmaier, The Puppeteer by Desiree York, Rules for Active Shooters by Frankie Little Hardin, and Life on the Moon by Anna Tatelman. Each play runs for six weeks, resulting in more than 180 performances each year.

The Theatre Is Small

There is nothing like experiencing local theatre productions in a small, intimate setting. You are close to the actors no matter where you sit, and you can see the entire production without any interference from anyone else. You get to know the people you sit with, thereby establishing even more of a sense of community. This theatre has just 194 seats, but despite the small space, more than 30,000 tickets are sold each season.

It Is Reasonably Priced

There are very few good attractions these days that will cost you under $20 per person, but this theatre has priced its individual tickets at just $17 per person if you buy your tickets in advance. If you buy them online or at the door, they are $20 each, still quite a bargain. For just $100, two people can get season tickets for all four shows per season, which is a steal any way you look at it.

There are many more reasons why you need to see a show here, but don’t take our word for it. While the theatre has not yet announced its new season due to COVID-19, as soon as they’re available, buy a ticket for an upcoming performance by either visiting the theatre’s box office in person or ordering one online.
