The entire Metro Detroit area is ideal for anglers of all stripes, and Highland Park, MI, is no exception. There are plenty of excellent fishing spots within just a few minutes’ drive, where you can drop a line and enjoy a peaceful few hours by the water. We’ve collected a few of our favorite places here, so read on to find the best places to fish near you.

1. Detroit River

Best known for the legendary walleye run that occurs every spring, the Detroit River rushes for over thirty miles, connecting Lake St. Claire and Lake Erie. Well over 2.4 million walleye move through the narrow, and as many fishermen follow them. Some of the fish can weigh up to 10 pounds. As if this wasn’t enough, white bass also runs down the river later in the year. In addition, muskies, smallmouth and rock bass, and yellow perch can be found here.

There are lots of great spots to access the river from, including the tranquil Belle Isle State Park. The park is a particular favorite of anglers thanks to the number of fishing piers set up specifically for fishermen. These are located on the south side of the island, to the west of the coastguard station. Other spots to fish from include Lake Erie State Park in Rockwood, Belanger Park, and Elizabeth Park near Trenton.

2. Belleville Lake

Situated right on the border of Wayne and Washtenaw counties, this large body of water covers nearly 1,300 acres and is especially known for its crappie and largemouth bass. In addition, large catfish are often found, some measuring as much as s feet in length. It’s also not uncommon for bullhead and northern pike to be landed here, as well as carp, muskies, and sunfish. The northern part of the lake also sees significant walleye action.

Some of the best places to fish are along the shoreline near French Landing Park, or at the fishing pier near the dam at the lake’s northern end. The lake is also a great place to fish from a boat, with several public launch ramps and access sites on Huron Drive and Rawsonville and Haggerty Roads.

3. Kensington Metropark

Located in Milford, this park includes not only the 1,200-acre Kent Lake, but also a significant stretch of the Huron River, and many of its connecting tributaries. Needless to say, the whole area attracts fishermen from far and wide. The lake has four piers on its banks, while the rive offers many shady and secluded spots to drop your hook.

Bluegill, northern pike, black crappie, yellow perch, large and smallmouth bass, and walleye are just a few of the many species that can be caught here. While most fishing will likely be done from the shore, there are also plenty of places where you can launch your boat and get on the water.
