Founded as a railroad hub in the northwestern outskirts of Detroit, the township of Highland, MI, is close to plenty of beautiful natural landmarks and local attractions for visitors of all ages. Whether you are living in the area or are passing by as part of a trip in your new 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee, here are three great spots you can easily drive to from the city center.
1. Indian Springs Metropark
Created as part of a series of efforts to preserve the natural environment of the region, Indian Springs Metropark is one of the go-to weekend destinations among residents of Highland and other nearby towns. Featuring an 18-hole golf course, a nature center, and a life-sized maze, this place offers family-friendly activities throughout the year.
Indian Springs Metropark encompasses an area of over 2,500 acres and is part of the Huron-Clinton system of metro parks in Michigan. This place is located just 10 miles northeast of the Highland city center and can be reached in about 20 minutes via route M-59. Other amenities you can find here include a series of hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, and a small water park.
2. University of Michigan Museum of Natural History
Located in the heart of the city of Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History is one of the best places to learn more about the prehistoric life of the region and check out four major permanent exhibits on evolution, wildlife from the Great Lakes, anthropology, and geology. Although the museum opened its doors to the public in 1956, it moved to its current location in 2019.
Getting from downtown Highland to the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History takes a little under 40 minutes by car via route US-23. Receiving more than 100,000 visitors each year, this museum is open Tuesday through Sunday between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. General admission to the museum is free of charge but donations are encouraged.
3. Island Lake Recreation Area
With an area of about 4,000 acres, Island Lake Recreation Area features thick woodlands, a hot air balloon launch point, and expansive meadows that make it a fantastic place to spend a day in nature. This public park is open every day of the week from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. Getting here takes less than 20 minutes by car via Hickory Ridge Road.
