With a population of more than five and a half million in its metropolitan area, Detroit, MI is the largest city in the state and one of the most important urban areas in the Midwest. Located right along the shores of Lake Michigan and the banks of the Detroit River, the city features some excellent parks and picnic spots where you can enjoy some time and have a snack with your friends or family.
1. Adison Oaks County Park
Featuring a little over a thousand acres of territory in the northern park of Detroit, the Adison Oaks County Park is one of the best natural spots for picnicking in the city and a popular weekend destination for visitors from all the Detroit metropolitan area and other nearby towns and cities. This park offers visitors different areas for activities including camping, biking, boating, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, cross-country skiing, and fishing.
Getting to the Adison Oaks County Park from downtown Detroit takes a little over 45 minutes by car, driving north along route I-75 N and Rochester Road. Once you make your way to the park, check out the map at the entrance to find the different picnic areas, which are equipped with public toilets, tables, and grills. Some of the best picnicking spots at this county park are located along the shores of Buhl Lake.
2. Belle Isle Park
Covering the entire territory of an island in the middle of the Detroit River, Belle Isle is one of the best places to spend a weekend with your friends and family and have a picnic in a natural setting without getting too far from the city. This park is owned and managed by the city of Detroit, and was established as a state park in 2014, although it has been visited by Detroit locals since the 19th Century.
Getting to Belle Isle from downtown Detroit takes just 15 minutes by car, driving along E Jeffersons Avenue and crossing the Detroit River via the MacArthur Bridge. Apart from the well-equipped picnic areas, Belle Isle is a great destination for cycling, hiking, visiting the zoo, swimming, and sunbathing. Some spots you should not miss while on the island include the James Scott Memorial Fountain, the Belle Isle Beach, and the Blue Heron Lagoon.
3. Beacon Park
Considered the largest urban park in downtown Detroit, Beacon Park opened its doors to the public in 2017 and covers an area of a little over an acre. This is a great spot for picnics and a popular weekend destination for Detroit locals, featuring a mix of historical monuments, beautiful gardens, water fountains, as well as some extra facilities including free Wi-Fi, power plugs, drinking water, and clean public toilets.
