Keeping your vehicle’s windows clean and clear is important for your safety. When you can’t see well through your windows, you can’t see the dangers on the street well, either. As a bonus, clean windows make your car look good and new. Though the task seems simple enough, there are a few tricks that will help you get the job done. Work smarter, not harder, with these tips for cleaning your car windows.

1. Get the Right Supplies

You’ll need two things to get your car windows spotless: window cleaner and a cloth. That may sound basic, but you should make sure you get the right ones for the job. For the window cleaner, make sure it’s streak-free. Otherwise, you’re trading one evil for another. We suggest Windex or a vehicle-specific brand such as Armor-All.

The wrong cloth can make your work more difficult. Opt for a microfiber cloth that won’t leave behind fuzzies on your windshield. Some people use newspaper, but that can stain your hands and make a mess of your car.

2. Sponge the Dirt Off

There’s one more tool you can use: your trusty sponge. If your windows are very dirty, either with months of dust or gifts from the birds, you’ll want to use a wet sponge to break up and wipe the grime off your windows. Don’t get your microfiber towel filthy by trying to use it to wipe your travels off your window.

3. Spray and Wipe

After the sponge, spray your windows again and take your microfiber to it to wipe away any excess dirt. Try to wipe away all the moisture from your windows to avoid leaving water spots. Repeat the process in the interior. Don’t forget to roll your windows partially down to get the tops of them hidden by your doors.

4. Inspect and Touch Up

Once your windows have dried, inspect them for any parts you might have to touch up. Some spots are tougher than others, and you may have to go over them a few times to get it right.

5. Attack Stubborn Splatter

Bug splatter is one of the most difficult things to get off your windshield. If you can’t seem to wipe them away with a couple of wipe-downs, it’s time to pull out another tool: bug stain remover. At your local car supply store, pick up a bottle of a solution specifically designed to remove persistent bug splatter. You could also try to apply baking soda to the spot, letting it sit, and then wiping it away.

6. Take Preventative Measures

Windshield wipers are something many people overlook when cleaning their windows. Use any towel to give these a wipe down, so you don’t have to deal with the frustration of dirtying your window again the next time you use them.

There you have it — clean windows that look like they just came out of the dealership. Use these tips to improve your visibility and make your car look better, which will make you feel better.
